知Zhihuzhe知乎者

Everything Zhihuzhe does, and what’s coming next.

The first four work today, in your browser and through the API the apps are built on. The rest are designed and on their way to the iPhone and Android apps.

Pronunciation check

Read any Chinese sentence aloud. Zhihuzhe listens to the recording itself, not a transcript of it, so it can hear the shape of each tone and the difference between sh and s.

You get back an overall score, separate scores for tones, sounds and fluency, every syllable marked, and a note from your teacher on what to change first.

  1. Step 1

    Choose a sentence

From a lesson, a chat, or anything you paste.

  2. Step 2

    Read it aloud

Record on your phone or in the browser.

  3. Step 3

    Get it back marked

Each syllable, three scores and a note.

What it listens for

  • Tones声调

All four tones, the light neutral tone, and the changes native speakers make without thinking, like 你好 and 一杯.

  • Sounds声母韵母

The pairs learners mix up: zh and z, ch and c, sh and s, j q x, the Chinese r, and endings in -n or -ng.

  • Fluency流利

Pacing and pauses: whether the sentence flows the way a native speaker would say it, or stops and starts.

Teachers you can chat with

Xiao Lin, Master Wang and Manager Li each teach differently, from relaxed small talk to exam drills to boardroom rehearsal. Every reply comes with pinyin over every character.

They know your HSK level, your goals and the words you’re working on, so a conversation at HSK 2 sounds nothing like one at HSK 5.

Meet the teachers
  1. Master Wang:

    今天我们练习把字句。请改一下这句话:我吃完了饭。

Today we're practicing 把 sentences. Rewrite this one: I finished eating.

  2. You:

    我把饭吃完了。

    I finished the meal.

  3. Master Wang:

    完全正确。把字句把宾语放到动词前面,强调结果。

Exactly right. 把 moves the object in front of the verb and puts the weight on the result.

Pinyin on any text

Paste anything and get pinyin with tone marks over each character, coloured by tone so the pattern of a phrase jumps out. Tone changes for 一 (yī) and 不 (bù) are applied the way textbooks print them.

Pinyin shows up here as you type.

Five voices

Every sentence can be read aloud in natural Mandarin. Pick a warm voice for everyday listening, or a clear, precise one when you’re copying a model sentence sound for sound.

Tone gym

Coming to the app

Tones are learned in pairs, not one at a time. Tone gym drills the 20 two-syllable combinations with real words, first by ear, then out loud, and spends longest on the pairs you miss.

It also teaches the tone changes textbooks mention once and never come back to.

One word for each pair. Rows are the first syllable’s tone.

Shadowing

Coming to the app

Shadowing is how interpreters train: hear a line and say it straight back, matching the rhythm as well as the sounds. Zhihuzhe draws your pitch over the model’s so you can see where you drifted.

  1. Step 1

    Listen

Hear the line in any of the five voices, at full speed or slowed to three-quarters.

  2. Step 2

    Repeat

Say it straight after, as close to the model as you can manage.

  3. Step 3

    Compare

Your pitch line is drawn over the model’s, syllable by syllable. Go again until they match.

Tone map

Coming to the app

Every check you do feeds one chart: how often you get each pair of tones right. Plenty of learners are fine on single tones and stumble on particular pairs, and this shows you which ones.

Each week your teacher picks the weakest pairs and builds your drills around them.

Stroke order

Coming to the app

Trace characters with your finger in a practice grid. Zhihuzhe checks each stroke’s direction and order as you go, and shows the next one when you’re stuck.

Calligraphy teachers start with 永, forever, because it contains all eight basic strokes. So do we.
